The Bakery Goes Online

A bakery sells out by nine every morning and turns people away at ten. Ida builds a shop that takes orders the night before, and learns to knead.

Client: Padaria Alta · Website

Ida behind the counter of a bakery at dawn with her laptop, next to a cheerful round baker holding a tray of croissants.

Previously on…

Padaria Alta bakes three hundred loaves a day and sells out before most people are awake. The baker wanted pre-orders for pick-up at seven, a menu that changes daily without calling Ida, and a site his customers' grandmothers could use.

Guest star

“She made the website so simple my mother orders on it. My mother does not trust the toaster.”

The episode

Cold open. Ten in the morning, a queue of disappointed people and an empty shelf. The baker shrugs. Roll titles.

Act one

Orders close at eight in the evening and the baker sees the list on a tablet by the oven: how many of each loaf, nothing else. The menu is a list he edits himself, on his phone, with flour on his hands.

Act two

The whole shop weighs less than one photo on the old site. It loads on the slowest phone in town, which belongs to the baker’s mother, who tested every page.

The tag

Ida now gets a loaf every Saturday. The cat gets the crusts.

Scenes

  • At night in the bakery, the baker throws flour in the air like confetti while Ida applauds, a tablet with a long list of orders on the counter.
The first night of pre-orders. 212 loaves. The flour went everywhere.
